1⃣. *WHAT ARE GALLSTONES❓*
Gallstones are stone-like materials which form when liquid bile stored in the gallbladder hardens or crystallizes.
Bile contains water, cholesterol, fat, bile salts, proteins and bilirubin.
If the liquid bile contains too much cholesterol, bilirubin or reduced bile salts, under certain conditions, it can hardening or crystallize into stones.
2⃣. *TYPES OF GALLSTONES*:
🇦. Cholesterol stones
🇧. Pigment stones
Cholesterol stones are usually yellow-green and are made primarily of *hardened cholesterol*. They account for majority of gallstones.
Pigment stones are small dark stones made of *bilirubin* which is a break-down [waste] product of red blood cells.
Gallstones can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a tennis ball.
*Problem is*, gallstones can *block* the normal flow of bile [the special juice] if they lodge or occlude any part of the tube that transport the bile from the liver to the intestine.
This can lead to *inflammation*, and if blocked for a significant period of time, *severe infections*, affecting the gallbladder, liver or pancreases.
