Cerebrovascular Disease: A condition very close to us but seems to be far, yes indeed it is more than a condition than a disease. – aneurysm
To many the term cerebrovascular disease might be new, some have never heard it at all but some might have heard it but cannot recall the exact place or topic that was being discussed at the moment. Although the term is new and strange to your ears, the conditions are very are very familiar and close to us.
Actually cerebrovascular disease is not a disease by its own but rather it is a group of conditions that can lead to many cerebrovascular events like stroke, transient ischemic attack and vascular malfunction. Other examples of cerebrovascular diseases include narrowing or blockage in the intracranial, vertebral arteries also known as stenosis carotid.
In general cerebrovascular disease refers to any possible condition that normally affects the supply of blood that is rich in oxygen to the brain, this automatically denies the supply of oxygen in the brain and thus the brain muscles that do not receive oxygen starts to die and this will lead to some complications in your health. Some symptoms can be seen early enough and they include:
- Sudden severe head ache
- Feeling weak
- Difficulty in communicating
If such symptoms are ignored then be sure to be a slave of a cerebrovascular attack in the near future. Because if medical attention is not sought after immediately then it will lead to ischemic attack which cannot be treated afterwards, because when a muscle tissue in the brain dies then it cannot be replaced meaning that the situation is irreversible, so when experiencing such symptoms you should seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Atherosclerosis is the commonest cause of stroke. Atherosclerosis is when a waxy substance usually known as plaque accumulates in the arteries that supply blood to the brain and thus leading to blockage or limiting the flow of blood to the brain translating to low or no supply of oxygen to the brain which eventually leads to death of the brain cells and the damage caused cannot be reversed.
Atherosclerosis is one type of cardiovascular disease and when the cholesterol levels are high in the arteries of the brain and inflammation in the arteries of the brain cause cholesterol to build up in the brain vessels as a substance that is waxy and makes the arteries to narrow or even block the flow of blood in the arteries. With time this condition can cause a cerebrovascular attack, such as a stroke or transient ischemic attack.
Most people however fall victim of such attacks because they either do not know the initial symptoms of the attacks or ignore them and assume nothing bigger will happen out of this. Some of these symptoms include:
- Becoming weak on one side.
- Poor vision.
- Loss of memory.
- Paralyzing on one side of the body.
- Severe head ache that its cause cannot be explained.
- Being confused.
- Losing your balance
- Losing your consciousness.
When the lining of a carotid artery tears then it can lead to ischemic stroke, ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain is blocked either partially or completely by a plaque or a blood clot to an individual who is as young as 40 years of age or even lower.
What actually happens when the lining tears is that blood flows between the layers of the carotid artery, thus narrowing the artery and reducing the flow of blood that is rich in oxygen to reach the brain.
What are some of the causes that are commonly associated with heart attack?
A lot of things that we do take us much closer to these conditions some of the people living among us that are vulnerable include;
check also heart-failure-epidemiology-clinical-manifestations/
- Severe cigarette smokers
- Diabetic patients
- People who have abnormal cholesterol are even six times more vulnerable compared to people with normal cholesterol level.
- People who have high blood pressure
- People who have stress most of often.
- Neighbors who have an abnormal obesity level or even just obesity of any level.
- If you are eating a diet that has no or has little fruits and vegetables then you are also putting your life in the line.
In general, anything that might inhibit blood from reaching the heart comfortably will automatically lead to death or inability to function, hindering the functioning of heart muscles caused by a loss of blood supply will make you vulnerable to such heart complications.
Note that even though these conditions are not inherited directly some caused are easily passed from one generation to the next one but not all.
Here are some warning signs to watch;
There are numerous signs that should raise a red flag about your health and the distance that you are keeping from experiencing a heart attack/ complication. As listed by the American Heart Association (AHA) some of these signs that should act as a major indicator include;
- Experiencing sudden shortness of breath.
- Experiencing pain or discomfort around the areas of the arms, stomach, jaw, back and the neck.
- Experiencing some sort of discomfort, pressure, squeezing around the chest area that does not last for a long time and it usually comes and goes frequently.
As advised by medical doctors/ physicians (especially those who have specialized in cardiac surgery or commonly known as cardiologists) is that these signs should call for immediate emergency services by a qualified physician/ cardiac surgeon.
Immediate emergency treatment when someone next to you experiences heart attack;
You will come face to face with panic when the friend next to you experiences a heart attack, worry no more as we got you sorted. Here are some things that you will do when you are caught in such a situation;
Cardio- pulmonary resuscitation, in case your friend experiences a severe heart attack and he or she cannot breath then immediately practice CPR (Cardio- pulmonary resuscitation) procedure on him or her.
The cardio- pulmonary resuscitation can be practiced using two main and only ways;
- Manual chest compression
- A defibrillator
This could be the only thing that stands in between your friend’s life and his death. It is an important skill all together.
